The decision-making body of the Council of Europe

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe is the decision-making body of the Council of Europe, composed of the Foreign Ministers of all member states or their permanent diplomatic representatives in Strasbourg. Working in cooperation with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, it is the guardian of the Council's core values and monitors member states' compliance with their commitments.

Council of Europe Committee of Ministers repeats call for release of Demirtaş and Yüksekdağ

At its meeting on September 15-16, 2026, the committee, citing rulings by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), called on Türkiye to ensure the "immediate release" of former HDP co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ. It also requested clarification on whether the new law covers applicants in the Demirtaş case file.

Council of Europe asks Türkiye for information on Kavala by October 14

The Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers, at its meeting on September 15-16, repeated its call for the immediate release of Osman Kavala and asked that concrete steps taken or planned be reported by October 14. The file will be taken up again no later than the December 1-3 meeting.
