Constitutional Court rules Özgür Özel's freedom of expression was violated

In the moral damages lawsuit filed by Fuat Oktay, the Constitutional Court ruled that ordering Özel to pay 10,000 lira constituted a violation of freedom of expression; it decided that Özel should be paid 50,000 lira in compensation and that the file be sent back to the Ankara 25th Civil Court of First Instance for retrial.[TRUNC]

In new-party name dispute, decision left to the Constitutional Court

Following an application by the Yenilik Party, the Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) Chief Public Prosecutor's Office sent Yeni Parti a notice regarding a name change; CHP leader Özgür Özel said they would not change the name, but if the Constitutional Court finds "there is confusion," they would proceed with a minor change.

Pro-government press Haber7 relayed a claim made by journalist Sinan Burhan on tv100: that Öztürk Yılmaz proposed giving up the party's name in exchange for being declared the presidential candidate during negotiations.

Opposition and foreign press Sözcü and Sputnik Türkiye focused on Özel's statements: according to legal experts, there is no name similarity, and the decision rests with the Constitutional Court.
