Former co-chair of the HDP, politician and lawyer

Selahattin Demirtaş is a Turkish politician, lawyer and writer. He served as co-chair of the Peace and Democracy Party from 2010 to 2014, and of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) from 2014 to 2018. He has been held in Edirne Prison since 4 November 2016, and announced after the May 2023 elections that he was leaving politics.

Sakık urges freedom not be tied to framework law following meeting with Demirtaş

Council of Europe Committee of Ministers repeats call for release of Demirtaş and Yüksekdağ

At its meeting on September 15-16, 2026, the committee, citing rulings by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), called on Türkiye to ensure the "immediate release" of former HDP co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ.
